With that, the Shakes eased into their best (and best-known)
song, "Hold On." The Athens-based band performed the soul-tinged rocker
at a
slower pace than the version appearing on their 2012 debut album "Boys
&
Girls." Singer Brittany Howard's vocals early in the song were subdued,
but this only made her sanctified howls during the choruses seem even
more juiced.
Howard's grunge-blues rhythm guitar playing, executed on a
green Gibson, was high in the mix. Lead guitarist Heath Fogg's throwback-R&B
fills were barely audible, but "SNL" music performances are notorious for being
frequently plagued by lackluster sound.
Shakes drummer Steve Johnson shifted the song's dynamics
expertly, grooving mellow with bearded bassist Zac Cockrell on the verses, and
bashing his kit with no mercy during choruses to match Howard's chicken-fried
hosannas. Touring keyboardist Ben Tanner added Hammond organ filigree.
Decked out in a maroon dress, large copper-colored earrings
and librarian-looking eyeglasses, Howard appeared noticeably slimmer than she
did when the Alabama Shakes first became a buzz band in 2011 and grew into an
"it" band in 2012.
For their second "SNL" performance of the evening, the Shakes peeled off a
strutting version of "Always Alright." The tune appears on the soundtrack of
the David O. Russell film "Silver Linings Playbook." The band picked up verve
as the song skidded along, and Howard's mouth-full-of-barbecue vocals were
reminiscent of Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill's.
The Shakes continue to emerge as one of the
hottest current acts in rock. To gauge the group's current temperature - even after going winless atthe 2013 Grammys less than a week ago - consider the musical guests on "SNL"
episodes immediately before and after the Shakes.
On Feb. 9, it was teen-idol
Justin Bieber, who according to a 2012 Forbes magazine story earned over
$55 million over the course of 12 months. And on Feb. 23, "SNL" will welcome Paul
McCartney. He was in this little band called The Beatles.
